LOCATION | Ubud is less than half an hour away by car, while the Tegalalang Rice Terraces are easily reachable.

FACILITIES | We’ve seen a lot of nice swimming facilities in Bali, but the Kayon takes the cake with its absolutely stunning trio of tiered pools, which emulate the surrounding rice terraces. Sure, you can’t do laps in these curvaceous beauties, but we don’t come to Ubud to swim laps!

That’s not all the hotel has to offer, however. There’s also an on-site restaurant, a gym, an art gallery, a boutique where you can buy some pretty souvenirs, a spa, and a yoga studio that opens out onto unbelievable jungle views. 

ROOMS | Employing a rustic aesthetic that’s executed to the highest degree of quality, the lodgings at the Kayon range from nicely sized suites with excellent panoramic terraces to sprawling villas with private pools and outdoor dining areas.

#11 Viceroy Bali – Top-Tier Amenities And Service.

The luxurious spa, the fine-dining restaurant, the jaw-dropping views – the Viceroy Bali doesn’t put a foot wrong with its immaculately delivered resort experience.

LOCATION | A little closer to Ubud than the other options we’ve included in this section, the Viceroy is just a five-minute drive from the main drag of town without sacrificing the natural splendour of the jungle hills.

FACILITIES | While many luxury resorts in Bali have excellent restaurants, few offer the fine-dining, white-tablecloth affair of the Viceroy’s Apéritif Restaurant and Bar, which harks back to colonial decadence. For something more chilled, there’s also the all-day CasCades, which overlooks the jungle valley.

As for wellness, there’s a spa, a well-equipped gym, a swimming pool, and a squash court, which we were impressed to discover can be used free of charge. The hotel can also arrange for several paid activities, including private yoga lessons, cooking classes, and sunrise treks.

ROOMS | The suites are characterised by bright-white décor, which creates a comfortable, clean haven. It’s the villas, however, that stand out thanks to their private plunge pools and attractive Balinese design features.

#12 Kamandalu Ubud – One Of The Best Luxury Resorts Bali For Families.

Staying in one of the Kamandalu Ubud’s standalone villas feels to us like occupying a local village – albeit one with 5-star facilities on site!

LOCATION | Ubud town is a 10-minute drive or a 40-minute walk – though you could also take advantage of the resort’s bicycles and split the difference. The airport is about an hour away.

FACILITIES | A complimentary, scheduled shuttle runs between the resort and Ubud town throughout the day, making it easy to explore such sights as the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary and Ubud Palace. 

You could be forgiven, however, for just wanting to spend all your time at the hotel, which features two pools, a spa, an all-day restaurant, and a boutique with stylish souvenirs. Speak to staff about arranging a picnic amidst the property’s rice terraces for a unique dining experience.

#17 The Ungasan Clifftop Resort – An Activity-Packed Escape.

In the running for the most luxurious hotel in Bali, the Ungasan Clifftop Resort is perched right on the edge of the Indian Ocean and is equipped to offer guests non-stop activities for the duration of their stay.

LOCATION | On the southernmost coast of Bali, this 5-star hotel is a short drive from Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, which boasts the tallest statue in Indonesia. The airport, meanwhile, is about an hour’s drive.

FACILITIES | A private beach area, grass and hard tennis courts, barbecue services, water sports, and a putting green are just some of the unique services on offer at the Ungasan Clifftop Resort, which also supplies the usual conveniences, such as a spa, a gym, and all-day dining.

If you’re looking for a part of Bali that remains magnificently untouched, Elevate Bali by Hanging Gardens is a secluded place to escape from the world.

LOCATION | This resort is situated in the verdant Munduk area in the northern highlands of Bali, in the vicinity of rice terraces, waterfalls, and serene lakes.

FACILITIES | Aside from the restaurant, bar, and coffee shop, Elevate Bali can also arrange several more bespoke meals, including a firepit BBQ, a picnic by the nearby lake, or a romantic meal for two.

There’s also an excellent spa on site, as well as a splendid outdoor swimming area.

FACILITIES | We’ve seen few spas that can compete with the one at this Four Seasons, which contains not just top-tier treatment rooms and soothing relaxation areas but also a room that utilizes sound and light to evoke a feeling of complete bliss.

There’s also a kids’ club, a cooking academy, and a gym on-site, as well as numerous experiences that can be arranged, from surf sessions to painting classes.

ROOMS | Villas here incorporate traditional Balinese architecture into their design, with stone-walled courtyards containing private pools, thatched roofs topping the room pavilions, and sun terraces with views so beautiful they might just bring a tear to your eye!

On site, you’ll find an infinity pool with plenty of loungers, a spa that incorporates indigenous ingredients and philosophy into its treatments, a zero-waste kitchen that cooks up creative eats with local flavours, and a bar serving cocktails that utilise freshly picked herbs and botanicals.

ROOMS | There are three levels of ‘bale’ on offer that are differentiated by the quality of their views. No matter which one you choose, however, you’ll be treated to a private plunge pool, a spacious sundeck, and beds that are surrounded not by walls but the jungle itself. 

#21 Wapa di Ume Sidemen – Mountain Village Life.

The stylish Wapa di Ume resort has been designed to match the aesthetic of the local village, so you can feel like you’re living amidst natural beauty and cultural tradition.

LOCATION | Unlike every other hotel on this list, Wapa di Ume is towards the eastern side of Bali, in an area that has been dubbed by some as the “new Ubud.” It takes at least 90 minutes from the airport to get here, but it’s worth it for the plethora of waterfalls, rice terraces and other natural attractions.

FACILITIES | The two-tier swimming pool is a beautiful place to relax, but you can also stay fit at the gym, treat yourself at the spa, or take a class at the specially designed yoga pavilion. Plus, there’s an open-air restaurant and bar serving up refreshments throughout the day.

In our opinion, however, the best thing you can do is hop on one of the free bikes and explore the untouched nature that surrounds the resort.

ROOMS | The crisply decorated rooms come in several different sizes, including a balconied terrace of 624 square feet and a 1,270-square-foot villa with a private pool.

Most Luxurious Resorts In Bali: Canggu

Canggu is on the sunset side of the island, which is why many people flock to this area to enjoy evening walks on the beach. Compared to Seminyak, the vibe is perhaps a little more chill and a little less buzzy, but it still attracts a very cool crowd.

#22 La Reserve 1785 Canggu Beach – French-Flavoured Historic Hotel.

La Reserve 1785 gets its name from the fact that it was built more than two centuries ago, but what makes it unique today is the combination of Balinese design with French flair.

LOCATION | The name of this resort is rather deceptive, as Canggu Beach is actually about half an hour’s walk away. Fortunately, La Reserve 1785 does offer a buggy that will drop you at the shore.

FACILITIES | Speaking of the shore, the hotel has a linked beach club where you can relax when you do decide to head for the sea. 

On the grounds, meanwhile, there’s a good-sized pool, a restaurant that focuses on Mediterranean cuisine, a complimentary daily breakfast, and a spa.

ROOMS | A modern entertainment system and contemporary hand-crafted furniture are set against Parisian posters and ornate mirrors that recall France’s Belle Epoque. 

The balconied rooms are spacious and chic, but for something ‘formidable’, as the French say, we recommend the Pavilion Pool Suite, a little world of its own, complete with a private plunge pool.

#23 COMO Uma Canggu – Contemporary Cool.

One of the more modern, minimalist luxury Bali resorts on the beach, COMO Uma has an excellent location just steps from the shore.

LOCATION | The airport is about 45 minutes away, and there are plenty of beaches nearby where you can surf, swim, and sunbathe. Within walking distance, you’ll also find a selection of nice restaurants and cafes where you can chillax, plus there’s a complimentary scheduled shuttle that takes guests about the local region.

FACILITIES | Our favourite place at the COMO Uma is its beach club, which offers a prime spot to catch the fading rays of the sun, drink in hand.
