Why is Ubud so special?

Nestled in the heart of Bali, Ubud is a haven for those seeking to immerse themselves in the island’s authentic countryside, culture and traditions.

Unlike its bustling counterparts, Kuta and Seminyak, famous for their great beaches and party vibes, Ubud offers visitors a peaceful and enriching experience unlike any other.

Here, you can stroll through the lush rice paddies, visit traditional Balinese homes and art workshops, and witness stunning cultural performances. But what truly sets Ubud apart is its focus on nature and the genuine Bali experience. Learn traditional healing practices, indulge in mouthwatering organic fare or simply soak up the tranquil atmosphere that surrounds you.

In Ubud, you’ll discover the true spirit of Bali and understand why it is such a special place.

Is Ubud expensive?

Ubud is super affordable and is a destination that won’t break the bank. A homestay starts as low as $10 per night, which includes the comfort of staying with a local family. For a more luxurious option, you can book a private pool villa starting at just $100 per night.

If you want to explore the surrounding areas, hiring a private driver for a whole day costs just over $50. Alternatively, you can rent a scooter for $5 per day and go anywhere you want.

When it comes to food, you can enjoy a meal in a Western-style cafe for $10 or go to a local restaurant, known as a warung, and have a meal for as little as $2.

For those on a budget, Ubud is an incredible destination that offers luxury experiences without compromising on a traveller’s bank account.

What are the best places to stay in Ubud for solo travellers?

For solo travellers, Ubud is the perfect place to explore on your own terms and spend some time cultivating a meaningful travel experience. You can enjoy the bustle of Ubud Centre, with its vibrant markets, delicious food options and easy accessibility to other areas of Bali.

Check out one of the many hostels in the area, which offers a great chance to meet like-minded people from all over the world. Arya Wellness is a perfect option for female travellers as it’s a ladies-only hostel.

For a more authentic experience, you could try staying with a local family in one of the many homestays Ubud has to offer, which often comes with your own private room. A good option is Nyoman Homestay.

If you’re planning to visit Ubud, you might be wondering how many nights you should stay. While a minimum of two nights and two full days is recommended, we really recommend staying a little longer if you can.

There is so much to see and do in Ubud; you don’t really want to miss out! From visiting the Monkey Forest and shopping for souvenirs in the Ubud Art Market to exploring Ubud Palace and local waterfalls and rice terraces, Ubud has it all.

As far as the best time to visit goes, the dry season from May to September is undoubtedly the best. With clear skies and rainfall mostly occurring at night, it is the perfect time to explore Ubud’s stunning rice paddies and ancient temples.

Is it better to stay in Ubud or Seminyak?

If you’re planning a trip to Bali, you might find yourself debating whether to stay in Ubud or Seminyak. Both offer unique experiences that cater to the different preferences of travellers.

If you’re looking to soak up the sun, surf and make the most of the beautiful beaches, Seminyak is the perfect place for you. With its plethora of restaurants, boutique shops, and luxury hotels, you’ll be sure to have plenty of options for your stay.

However, if you’re seeking an authentic Balinese experience with a focus on nature and tranquillity, Ubud is the way to go. Surrounded by lush jungle and stunning rice paddies, this town boasts eco-conscious hotels that are sympathetically built to nature, as well as yoga retreats that will inspire and rejuvenate your soul.

Where not to stay in Bali?

This is a tricky question since every part of Bali is safe and offers something unique, and we truly love every corner here. But, depending on what you want out of your holidays, some parts of Bali may be more suitable than others.

For starters, Kuta can be overwhelming, crowded, and lacking in local charm. Its party atmosphere, frequent traffic jams, and crowded beaches can put a damper on your escape from everyday life.

Canggu has been immensely growing in popularity amongst younger travellers and backpackers and hugely suffers from traffic and accommodation rates constantly going up.

For an authentic experience, we recommend adding to your Bali itinerary a few days in places such as Ubud, Sidemen or Munduk.
