Each one has a full suite of facilities, including restaurants, spas, and pools, to help make your visit to Bali a once-in-a-lifetime treat.

The following boutique places to stay are nestled in iconic Bali locales, each offering its own distinctive charm. Ubud, revered as the island’s cultural heart, immerses visitors in its tranquil rice terraces and age-old temples. Seminyak, on the other hand, tantalizes with its upscale beach clubs and chic boutiques. And then there’s Canggu, a harmonious blend of laid-back surfer and expat vibes.

#1 Capella Ubud – Treetop Bali Boutique Hotel.

Capella Ubud is one of the most unique hotels in Bali: a gorgeous collection of 23 self-described ‘tents’ (really more luxury treehouses) nestled amidst the lush foliage of the jungle in Ubud.

LOCATION | The complex is just a short drive from the famous Tegalalang Rice Terraces and the beautiful Manuaba Waterfall. Bali’s international airport is just under two hours away.

FACILITIES | There are two main restaurants on site: Mads Lange, a casual eatery that focuses on sustainably sourced Indonesian and international fare, and Api Jiwa, which delivers an omakase-style barbecue experience.

Lacking for nothing, the resort also provides a spa, a gym, a communal pool, and an evening campfire experience with marshmallows and movies. An a la carte breakfast is included in the room rate, and complimentary bikes can be utilized by guests who want to explore the nearby nature.

ROOMS | There are five different styles of room available at Capella Ubud, including the one-bedroom Keliki Valley tents with their sizable outdoor decks and private pools, as well as the two-bedroom Lodge, which is decorated in a Chinese theme.

#2 The Ungasan Clifftop Resort – Decadent Hangout.

Hanging over the ocean, the Ungasan Clifftop Resort is equipped to offer guests both endless activities and endless relaxation, with everything from tennis courts to a private beach area in Uluwatu.

LOCATION | Right on the southernmost coastline of Bali, this 5-star hotel is about an hour from the airport. The nearby area has several beaches and the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, which boasts the tallest statue in Indonesia.

FACILITIES | Luxury boutique hotels in Bali don’t come better equipped than the Ungasan Clifftop Resort. In addition to its own private beach area and the grass and hard tennis courts, the hotel also provides a spa, a gym, barbecue services, water sports, an all-day restaurant, a putting green – the list goes on.

Our favourite thing, however, is the communal infinity pool, which takes full advantage of the clifftop location to offer stunning views of the sea that you can enjoy with an expertly mixed cocktail in hand.

ROOMS | There are several types of spacious suites available, but for something thoroughly over the top, splurge on one of Ungasan’s five-bedroom villas, which come with their own private pools.

#3 Bambu Indah – Bamboo Bliss Boutique Hotel In Bali.

Literally meaning ‘beautiful bamboo,’ Bambu Indah lives up to its name with its bamboo-dominated décor, creating an eco-friendly stay amidst Bali’s jungle.

LOCATION | The town of Ubud is a short drive away, featuring palaces, rock-cut shrines, and the famous Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. There are also a couple of Indonesian restaurants within walking distance.

FACILITIES | We could quite happily eat all our meals in the open-air Riverside Warung cafe, which serves up Balinese classics cooked from locally sourced ingredients. The hut overlooks the resort’s bathing pools, which use lava stones and vegetation to naturally cleanse and filter the water without the need for chemicals.

In the evenings, head to the Elevator Sunset Bar for treetop views bathed in the orange glow of the fading sun. There are also massage pods where you can slip away for an hour or two to enjoy a soothing treatment.

ROOMS | One of the most inventive Bali boutique resorts, Bambu Indah has created 10 distinctive spaces for guests to stay in, from a spacious riverside house whose façade is almost entirely glass and bamboo to a floating, canvas-shaded platform built into the forest canopy.

#4 La Reserve 1785 Canggu Beach – A Soupcon Of France In Indonesia.

One of the most historic boutique hotels in Bali, La Reserve 1785, has been around for more than 200 years. While the teak floors date back to the original building, much of the current design is the work of the antique collector and self-proclaimed love priestess Henriette Reboul, who purchased the property in 1936.

LOCATION | Despite its name, La Reserve is not on the beach, though there is a hotel buggy that will drop you on the shore.

FACILITIES | The on-site dining (including the complimentary breakfast) focuses on Mediterranean fare, while the spa offers a mix of massages and body scrubs.

There’s a good-sized pool within the grounds, but when you want to head to the sea, the hotel has a linked beach club where you can relax.

ROOMS | Hand-crafted contemporary furniture is complemented by a top-notch entertainment system, colourful artwork, and ornate mirrors that recall France’s Belle Epoque.

There are several sizable, balconied suites, but for something tres chic, we recommend the Pavilion Pool Suite, a little word of its own, complete with a private plunge pool.

#5 The Bohemian Bali – Design Rhapsody.

Exuding modern sophistication, the Bohemian is one of the best design hotels Bali has to offer, with chic modern suites that will send interior décor aficionados into swoons.

LOCATION | About half an hour’s walk from the sandy stretch of Batu Bolong in Canggu, which is particularly popular with surfers, the Bohemian is off a pretty active street of cafes and shops. There’s even a hipster beer hangout, Black Sand Brewery, right opposite the entrance to the hotel.

FACILITIES | The Bohemian is more of an aparthotel than a full-service resort, though a complimentary breakfast is served every morning.

Having said that, we’re big fans of Bohemian’s portfolio of green policies: the place generates 30% of its energy and 100% of its hot water from a solar-powered heat pump. There’s also an incredibly useful electric buggy service, which will take guests around Canggu for free.

ROOMS | The suites here are sizable affairs, ranging from around 1,200 square feet to 1,500 square feet. Each one comes with an open-plan kitchen-living area as well as a compact little plunge pool where you can cool off during the day.

#6 Own Villa Bali – Best Boutique Hotels Bali For Island Charm.

Just the sight of the Sumatran-style houses of Own Villa was enough to get us tongue-tied. If you’re looking to stay in boutique hotels in Bali that are built using traditional methods and materials, this is the place for you!

LOCATION | Around 45 minutes from the airport, Own Villa is located in Canggu, a short drive/motorbike ride from numerous beaches – take the opportunity to explore all of Bali’s southwestern shore!

FACILITIES | While the complex may use time-honoured construction practices, the facilities are very much in keeping with modern comfort. The property contains a spa, a restaurant serving Indonesian and (for some quirky reason) Italian cuisine, and a decent-sized communal pool.

A complimentary continental breakfast is available every morning. If you want to upgrade your experience, check out the honeymoon package, which includes a couples’ massage, a candlelit dinner by the pool, and floral bedroom bouquets.

ROOMS | Forming their own little village, the villas here boast distinctively curved thatched roofs that provide loads of headroom, making the huts feel even more spacious than their 592 square feet. Wooden furnishings dominate the decoration, lending everything a quaint, rustic vibe that’s utterly charming.

#7 Munduk Cabins – The Ideal Nature Retreat.

Few Bali boutique hotels can beat the views at Munduk Cabins, which take in all the majestic nature of the island’s interior with epic views and luxury design.

LOCATION | Surrounded by waterfalls, rice terraces, lakes, and the lush jungle, Munduk is an excellent location for hiking enthusiasts. Towards the northern part of Bali, it’s just over two hours from the airport.

FACILITIES | The Munduk Cabins come with a decent outlay of facilities, including a smart all-day restaurant and bar, an outdoor plunge pool, a hot tub, and a fire pit. What we like most about all these areas is that each one has been designed to make the most of the scenic surroundings.

ROOMS | The accommodation here is impeccably modern, with floor-to-ceiling windows allowing guests to experience the full splendour of the views.

While there are only six cabins, each one has a different size and layout, from the 388-square-foot studio with tree-enshrouded cabana to the 1,292-square-foot two-bedroom suite, which comes with a fully equipped kitchen-dining-living room, two bathrooms, and a big balcony with chairs and a banquette.

Best Mid-Range Boutique Hotels Bali

If you want to spend less of your holiday budget on the hotel bill and more on local artwork, foodie delicacies, temple visits, and nature adventures, these mid-range boutiques still guarantee a memorable stay while leaving you a bit more cash for you to enjoy other experiences.

#8 Kamandalu Ubud – Upscale Village Life.

One of the most beautifully located boutique hotels in Bali, the Kamandalu is situated on a hillside surrounded by Ubud’s rice paddies and jungle.

LOCATION | The centre of Ubud is about a 10-minute drive or a 40-minute walk from the resort, while the airport is around an hour away.

FACILITIES | Given the range of facilities, we reckon the Kamandalu Ubud is one of the most affordable boutique hotels Bali has to offer. There are two pools, spas, an all-day restaurant, and a shop where you can buy local clothing and souvenirs. Our favourite thing to do here, however, is picnic amidst the rice terraces.

A complimentary shuttle runs between the resort and Ubud at scheduled times, and you can arrange for airport transfers for an additional fee. Alternatively, free parking is on offer if you elect to drive, and there are bicycles to use if you fancy a cycle.

ROOMS | There are quite a few different accommodation options here, from the chalets with sunken bathtubs to the villas with their own private pools. All of the lodgings are large, with the biggest able to accommodate six people.

#9 The Colony Hotel Bali – Beach Adjacent Boutique Resort Bali.

If you’re looking for cool hotels in Bali that are just a short walk from the beach, the Colony offers a stylish experience within a building that’s modelled on Dutch colonial architecture

LOCATION | This property is situated amidst the buzzing sights and sounds of Seminyak (Petitengent area), which is as famed for its trendy nightlife as it is for its sandy shoreline. Restaurants and shops galore are within easy reach.

FACILITIES | Despite being in the heart of Seminyak, the Colony’s 16-metre outdoor pool is a private space that’s sheltered from the public gaze. The complimentary breakfast is served in the lobby, while the poolside café provides a mix of local and international cuisine during the day. Massages can be booked with the staff, and there’s a decent gym with all the essentials.

ROOMS | As far as boutique hotels in Bali go, this one has a very distinctive design aesthetic that will take you right back to the 1700s. Whitewashed walls, dark wood furniture, and Indonesian textiles decorate the rooms, which range from simple doubles to expansive club suites.

Book your stay at this boutique hotel in Seminyak at the best rate here:

#10 Balquisse Heritage Hotel – Characterful Design Hotel Bali.

Conveniently located, the Balquisse Heritage Hotel is just a 20-minute car ride from the airport. It’s also one of the more unique hotels in Bali, blending Javanese design with Moroccan elements. We stayed in this hotel a couple of times, and we think Balquise is the perfect place to stay for couples!

LOCATION | The hotel is a short walk from Jimbaran Beach, while the brand-new convention centre is just opposite.

FACILITIES | The opulently arrayed Henna Spa is a lovely place to enjoy a massage, complemented by three different private pools. A free breakfast is served in the Asam Garam restaurant, which also dishes up Indonesian eats for lunch and dinner.

Addons include cooking classes and a candlelit Rijsttafel dining experience.

ROOMS | Forget minimalism, the rooms at Balquisse are loaded with flashy light fixtures, colourful textiles, and elaborately carved woodwork. There are several different themed lodgings, but our favourite is the Vintage Teak House, which features a private terrace, a decadent bathtub, and lots and lots of beautiful teak furniture.

#11 Blue Karma Dijiwa Seminyak – Modern Rooms In The Heart Of Town.

The Blue Karma Dijiwa Seminyak is a great option for people seeking modern boutique hotels in Bali that are right in the heart of the action, with all kinds of modern conveniences a short walk away. This is our go-to hotel in Seminyak, and we love their floating breakfast experience and healthy restaurant!

LOCATION | This resort is closer to the bustling shopping and dining area of Jalan Raya Seminyak than it is to the beach. Having said that, it only took us 15 minutes to walk to the shore, though the hotel does have a shuttle to drop you off if even that sounds like too much work.

FACILITIES | Keto-friendly meals are served up for breakfast, lunch, and dinner beside the pool or within the semi-open dining area. The facilities also include a spa, a gym, and a small studio where you can sign up for daily yoga classes.

ROOMS | Traditional Indonesian arts and crafts meet modern design in the hotel’s rooms, which include one-bedroom suites as well as pool-equipped villas that can accommodate up to four people.

Whether you’re an affluent young professional who likes to surf or a family seeking simple properties beside calm seas, we’ve got you covered!

#12 The Asa Maia – Adults-Only Haven.

The wellness-minded Asa Maia is the place to go if you’re looking for a refresh for your body and mind, with numerous on-site treatments as well as a nature-enclosed outdoor pool. The property also boasts a prime location in Uluwatu, near Padang Padang Beach and Single Fin Beach Club.

LOCATION | Situated on the western side of the Bukit Peninsula in Uluwatu, there are several beaches within walking distance of the Asa Maia, with some of the best surfing waves Bali has to offer.

FACILITIES | Among the best boutique hotels in Bali for people who want some rest and rejuvenation, the Asa Maia offers contrast therapy pools, an infrared sauna, breathwork sessions, yoga classes, Pilates, a 24-hour gym, and hypnotherapy, among several other treatments.

Over at the restaurant, the wellness theme continues with cold-pressed juices, charcoal buns, pulled barbecue jackfruit, and tuna rendang. Superfoods like spirulina and turmeric bolster smoothie bowls, and all the meals are made from organic, local ingredients.

ROOMS | The light-filled rooms at the Asa Maia are some of the most soothing we’ve seen in Bali, composed of natural materials and bespoke furniture.

#13 COMO Uma Canggu – Contemporary Comfort For Surf Seekers.

Cool hotels in Bali don’t come much chicier than COMO Uma Canggu, which is a supremely modern setup just steps from the shore.

LOCATION | The hotel is along one of the best surfing stretches in Canggu (between Batu Balong and Echo Beaches), while Ngurah Rai International Airport is about 45 minutes away by car.

FACILITIES | There are a couple of large pools at the COMO Uma Canggu, as well as a big fitness centre, treatment rooms, and a daily itinerary of exercise activities to keep you hale and hearty.

Our favourite place to hang out here, though, is on the deck of the beach club, where you can lounge with a drink while gazing at the sunset. It’s also here where you’ll find the in-house restaurant, which serves meals throughout the day.

A complimentary scheduled shuttle transports guests to popular areas around Canggu, and there’s also free private parking on site.

ROOMS | Apparelled in bright white, the rooms here are the epitome of contemporary comfort. There’s a huge range of accommodation options, from the relatively inexpensive but compact 387-square-foot basic rooms to the 1,067-square-foot residences with decks that open out directly onto the lagoon pool.

#14 Puri Wulandari A Boutique Resort & Spa – Chic Boutique Hotel Bali For Romantic Getaways.

Built into a terraced hill, the Puri Wulandari is a collection of stunning villas that are perfect for weddings, honeymoons, anniversaries, or any other couple’s getaways.

LOCATION | The property is set amidst the hills of the Ubud region, about half an hour’s drive from various waterfalls and an hour to the airport.

FACILITIES | A shuttle bus connects the resort with the town of Ubud, though Puri Wulandari has pretty much everything you need on-site, including two restaurants, a bar, and in-villa dining. There’s also a large infinity pool with panoramic views, plus a spa with Jacuzzis, saunas, and treatment rooms.

Hop on one of the hotel’s bikes and make your own way around, or head to the tour desk for sightseeing bookings. Alternatively, there are some cultural classes you can take on-site, including batik painting, cookery, and dancing.

ROOMS | The villas are designed to emulate traditional Balinese architecture, incorporating thatched roofs, wooden furniture, and huge sliding doors that can turn the bedroom into one big, open-air space that leads directly out onto the sizable private pool.

#15 Goya Boutique Resort – Excellent Ubud Escape.

One of the best boutique hotels in Bali if you want to be located within a town, the Goya Boutique Resort is well situated for waterfall and rice terrace day trips while providing plenty of eating and shopping opportunities right on your doorstep.

LOCATION | This hotel is found within Ubud town itself, just off picturesque Jalan Bisma with its various shops and restaurants. Pura Taman Saraswati (aka Ubud Water Palace) and the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary are both within walking distance.

FACILITIES | The spa offers massage treatments and yoga classes, while the on-site restaurant and bar serve up standard international fare – we recommend heading elsewhere if you want Indonesian delicacies, though it is worth popping down on Wednesday evenings when the venue puts on a barbecue night with live acoustic music and traditional Balinese dancing.

Rounding out the facilities is an excellent outdoor infinity pool with views of the jungle.

ROOMS | The rooms at Goya Boutique manage to balance modern comfort and design with a few traditional decorative flourishes. Choose between sizable balconied suites or villas with their own private pool.

#16 MASMARA Resort Canggu – Laidback Vibes.

The MASMARA Resort supplies a more chill vibe than some of the overtly opulent options on this list, one that will suit laidback surfers or families looking for a quiet place to relax.

LOCATION | Pererenan Beach is just outside the resort, though if you want a prettier, more popular sandy, you can wander down the coast to Batu Bolong.

FACILITIES | There aren’t quite as many amenities here as elsewhere, but there is a pool prettily enveloped in a nice green garden and a restaurant where breakfast is served. The hotel can also arrange various tours and experiences.

ROOMS | Couples will find the 463-square-foot deluxe rooms perfectly ample, with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that open out onto a private wooden deck. Boutique Hotels In Bali: FAQs

What is the most luxurious area to stay in Bali?

For the epitome of luxury in Bali, look no further than Seminyak and Nusa Dua. Seminyak boasts pristine beaches, high-end resorts, and upscale dining. Nusa Dua, on the other hand, is a haven of opulence with its exclusive resorts and world-class golf courses. These two areas offer the ultimate Balinese luxury and unforgettable experiences.

Should I Stay In More Than One Place In Bali?

Exploring different areas in Bali provides a more comprehensive experience of this enchanting island. For example, staying in Seminyak offers luxury and vibrant beach scenes, while Ubud immerses you in Bali’s rich culture and lush landscapes. By experiencing both, you get the best of beachfront leisure and cultural immersion, creating a well-rounded, unforgettable journey.

How Many Days In Bali Do I Need?

We recommend staying in Bali for at least 10. This timeframe allows you to explore the island’s diverse offerings without rushing. Spend a few days in Seminyak, Canggu or Uluwatu for beachfront luxury, delve into Ubud’s culture for 2-3 days, and reserve time for adventure, like hiking and exploring nearby islands. It’s the perfect balance for a memorable Bali experience.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Bali?

The best time to visit Bali is during the dry season, from May to September. This period offers plenty of sunshine, perfect for exploring beaches, temples, and outdoor adventures. The island’s lush landscapes are at their most vibrant, and you’ll avoid the frequent rains of the wet season, making it an ideal time for a dreamy Balinese getaway.

Boutique Hotels In Bali: Final Word

While Bali might be most famous for its beaches, there’s a lot more to the gorgeous Indonesian island for visitors to explore. Whether you like the idea of spending your time ensconced amidst a lush jungle or lounging on a private sandy shore, there are plenty of boutique hotels in Bali to suit every palate.
